YOUTH ELECTRICIANS SKILLS TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT IN LAS-ANOD, Somalia

Background and Rationale:
Youth unemployment remains one of the most pressing challenges in Somalia. With over 70% of the population under the age of 30, the lack of access to vocational skills training has left many young people without viable employment opportunities. Meanwhile, the demand for electricians continues to rise due to increasing urbanisation and infrastructure development. This project aims to bridge this gap by equipping 30 young people aged between 16-30 with essential electrical skills through formal training, hands-on practical experience with local electrical firms, and post-training support, including the provision of toolkits to kickstart their careers.

Project Objectives:

1.  Train 30 youth in basic to intermediate electrical installation, maintenance, and safety practices.

2.  Provide practical on-the-job experience through partnerships with established local electrical firms.

3.  Support post-training employment by equipping each trainee with a start-up electrical toolkit.

4.  Promote entrepreneurship and self-employment among young people in Las-Anod’s growing electrical services sector.

Poverty Reduction and Basic Needs Support

Somali Aid is committed to reducing poverty and meeting the most urgent needs of vulnerable communities affected by conflict, drought, displacement, and economic instability. The organisation delivers life-saving and livelihood-supporting interventions that provide stability and dignity to those in crisis.

Key activities include:

  • Emergency food assistance through the distribution of essential items such as rice, flour, oil, and pulses to families facing hunger or displacement.
  • Access to clean water and sanitation via water trucking, borehole rehabilitation, and hygiene awareness campaigns to prevent disease and improve community health.
  • Basic healthcare support delivered through local clinics and mobile outreach, targeting mothers, children, and the elderly.
  • Livelihood recovery initiatives that help families rebuild their means of income through small business grants, livestock distribution, and agricultural support.

These interventions not only address immediate humanitarian needs but also help families move toward long-term resilience and self-reliance. Somali Aid’s approach ensures that communities are equipped to withstand future crises and reduce dependence on emergency aid

Orphan Programme

Orphan Programme

Education is at the heart of Somali Aid’s mission to break the cycle of poverty and create sustainable change. The organisation works to ensure that orphans and disadvantaged children, particularly those affected by conflict, poverty, or displacement have the opportunity to attend school and thrive academically.

We are supporting four primary schools to:

  • Covering school fees and exam costs for orphaned and low-income children who would otherwise be unable to continue their education.
  • Providing school uniforms, books, and learning materials to reduce the financial burden on families.
  • Support for teachers and schools, including training, minor facility improvements, and classroom equipment to enhance learning environments.
  • Community awareness and engagement to encourage parents and guardians to prioritise education, especially for girls.

Through these efforts, Somali Aid helps ensure that every child regardless of background has the chance to learn, grow, and build a better future. Access to education empowers children, strengthens families, and creates pathways toward peace, prosperity, and opportunity across Horn of African communities.
